Often misunderstood, autoimmune science evokes an age-old question.
What is self?
The role of autoimmune mechanisms is to “Know Thyself” in the words of Socrates - to differentiate one’s 'self’ (“self-cells”) from the outside world and attack anything it deems harmful, foreign or invading.
So how does it all go sideways? And, better yet, how can we develop a more effective vision for autoimmune disease treatment?

Due to the diversity of affected organs and symptoms, diagnosis can be complex (it can take an average of nearly five years and 5 physicians to get a proper diagnosis!) and treatment typically focuses on controlling the immune response and alleviating symptoms.
We believe understanding autoimmune science as a whole leads to more success than studying each autoimmune disease in isolation.
At Praespero, our goal is to fund research of all autoimmune diseases and their root causes.
Because, combined, this is the other disease.
